Capabilities

Everything a high-voltage scheme needs, from one engineering team.

Five capability areas that are usually bought separately — and are cheaper, faster and safer when they are not. Choose the one you need, or let us carry the scheme end to end.

Substation design

Complete FEED and detailed design for air-insulated and gas-insulated substations — primary plant, secondary systems, civil interfaces and HV cables — produced to the technical specifications of the network operator who will own it.

  • Single line diagrams and operational diagrams
  • Electrical equipment layouts, elevations and sections
  • Safety clearance and phase-spacing checks
  • Plant and equipment specifications to DNO / TSO standards
  • Earthing design — CDEGS soil and grid studies, step and touch assessment, earth grid layouts
  • Short-circuit force and wind-load calculations for busbars and structures

Power system studies

Every connection offer, compliance submission and plant upgrade rests on studies that have to stand up to scrutiny. We run the full set for substations and grid connections, state our assumptions plainly, and hand over models you can reuse.

  • Load flow and voltage profile studies
  • Fault level studies — three-phase and earth faults, make and break duties
  • Contingency (N-1) and outage assessment
  • Reactive power capability — P-Q envelopes at the connection point
  • EREC G99 and GB Grid Code compliance study packs
  • Fault ride-through (FRT) and fast fault current injection (FFCI)

HVDC consultants

HVDC is unforgiving work and it is where Unit Vector Solutions started. We support developers, owners and contractors through option selection, FEED and the definition of the control and protection that makes a converter station behave.

  • Development and independent review of HVDC main scheme parameters
  • Feasibility assessment, optioneering and value engineering
  • Studies supporting option selection — AC/DC interaction, reactive compensation, harmonics
  • FEED for converter station primary and secondary systems
  • Functional specifications for HVDC control and protection
  • Sequence design — start-up, shut-down, transitions and restart strategies

Renewables & BESS

Connection strategy, electrical balance of plant and compliance evidence for generation and storage projects — carried from feasibility through to energisation and the compliance sign-off that follows.

  • Connection strategy, application support and offer review
  • Grid Code and EREC G99 compliance studies and evidence packs
  • Point-of-connection substation design at distribution and transmission voltages
  • Witness testing and compliance process support through to final sign-off
  • Array and collector network electrical design
  • Inverter, transformer and switchgear sizing and specification

Owner's engineer & assurance

Design assurance roles under National Grid TP141, owner’s engineer support, technical bid writing and the project and procurement management that keeps a scheme on programme.

  • Contractor Design Assurance Engineer (CDAE) and Lead CDAE roles under National Grid TP141
  • Design review and approval against TSO and DNO technical specifications
  • Technical assurance of contractor and OEM design submissions
  • Independent verification of safety-critical calculations
  • Owner-side engineering through feasibility, design, construction and commissioning
  • Review of vendor proposals, deviations and technical queries

How we deliver

One team across the whole route.

Every capability above plugs into the same five-stage delivery route, so a study commissioned at feasibility is still useful at commissioning.

01

Feasibility

Options, constraints, connection strategy and an honest view of cost and programme risk.

02

Design

FEED through detailed design, studies and specification, co-ordinated across primary and secondary.

03

Procurement

Tender packages, technical evaluation, supplier negotiation and delivery expediting.

04

Construction

Issued-for-construction drawings, technical queries, temporary works interfaces and site support.

05

Commissioning

FAT and SAT, settings application, energisation support and as-built close-out.

Not sure which capability you need?

Describe the problem rather than the service. We will tell you which of these it actually is, and whether it is one package or several.
